The Cincinnati Soap Box Derby "Build-A-Box" car-building competition is a challenge designed to create better workers, thinkers and team players. Participants in these team-building events actually become more successful in business by allowing themselves to have more fun. This competition is loaded with excitement and surprises and the benefits will continue to make a positive impact long after the wrenches, helmets and checkered flags are put away.

The Build-A-Box Competition and Soap Box Derby are great ways for companies to give back to their communities and provide fun, high energy, team-building for their group. The competition is divided into sections with three chances to win: Building, Decorating and the Soap Box Derby race.

Corporate teams of 4-5 members are matched up with a youth and Program Director from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati. The goal is to build 7-12 Soap Box Derby cars. Cars used in this competition are in two divisions, Stock Division for kids ages 8 thru 13; and Super Stock Division for kids ages 10 thru 17.

The Building Competition

This is a race to see which team can successfully assemble a Soap Box Derby car -- and pass a standard AASBD inspection -- the quickest.

Teams will have the days and weeks leading up to the competition to assign roles and develop a game plan on how to complete the task. An advance copy of the

assembly instructions will be made available to all teams when they register.

On May 18, 2008, race teams will have up to 4 hours to

complete the car during the competition at the BMW Store, in Silverton. After assembly, the teams submit the cars for safety inspection to determine if all steps were completed per the instructions. The youth team member must also take an active role in the building of the car.

The Decorating Competition

The car bodies (shells) will be available to the teams as early as May 4, 2008 -- two weeks prior to the Build Day. Teams will have that time to decorate and logo their shells. Judges will review the shells and determine the winners in "Most Artistic" and "Best Brand Impression" categories.

The Build-A-Box Derby Competition

After the Build, teams will have four weeks to fine-tune the car and practice with their driver. All teams in the Build-A-Box competition are automatically entered into the Cincinnati Soap Box Derby, which takes place on June 21.

At the Derby, the suspense will build as cars zip down the street in a series of double-elimination heats, yielding breathtaking finish times within ten-thousandths of a second. There will be unique trophies awarded to the highest-finishing Build-A-Box teams. Separate awards for Stock and Super Stock divisions.
